This match was re-arranged at the hosts’ behest earlier in the season – and on reflection perhaps that wasn’t a great idea given Gwernyfed’s current form, form which delivered sixteen tries and a hundred points – at which juncture the referee drew matters to an early finish.
With games coming thick and fast the green, white and black coaches rotated the squad, youngsters Rory Mears and Ollie Rose using the opportunity to good effect with performances beyond their years. Several other changes were rung but it mattered little - the Blaenavon hosts were put to the sword.
When full back Ryan Davies crossed within a minute of kick off the scene was set for mayhem. After forty minutes the Talgarth men had sixty-nine points and eleven tries on the scoreboard. By the time the referee called ‘no contest’, Jack Williams and his team had chalked up another five tries with fly half Tyler Morris delivering twelve conversions in all as part of a consummate display.
The dizzying array of tries included six from Ryan Davies, two each from Andrew ‘Chuck’ Norris and Will Eckley and singletons from Dylan Skyrme, Will Powell, Sam Clegg, Tom Lloyd, Luke Eckley and skipper jack Williams himself.
In truth this was a game that, whilst hoisting Gwernyfed to the top of the table with two games in hand over the nearest challengers, did neither side a lot of good. Sterner challenges await in the run in, the first of four games a visit to Llanhilleth on Saturday with the league season culminating on 26 and 30 April when Crickhowell and Crumlin respectively visit The Brian Jones Memorial Field in Talgarth.
