WELCOME TO GWERNYFED RFC
Gwernyfed Rugby Football Club was founded in 1965 through the dedication and tireless
work of two local Gwernyfed High School teachers, namely, David Knapp and Bernard
Altmeyer. For many years the Club, as members of the Neath & District Junior Rugby
Union, used the School's rugby pitches to play all its home fixtures and, under the
good auspices of the New Inn Talgarth, provided excellent post-match hospitality
to its visitors.
In its early years, the Club regularly fielded three senior teams and a youth team
and, as a result, numerous players ere selected for District and County honours.
None more so than local farmer, Vin Stephens, who, having played over fifty times
for the County and also realising the Club's limited playing facilities, kindly allowed
the use of a field in Talgarth which quickly became the recognised 1st XV venue.
Several milestones in Gwernyfed R.F.C.'s short history took place in the next decade;
the most memorable being the introduction of a very successful
mini-rugby section
and the total exodus of the Club's home fixtures from Gwernyfed High School to two
new pitches in Talgarth kindly provided by Brecon Borough Council.
An equally significant
event, however, occurred in September 1990 when, after years of fundraising, Club
members managed to accumulate enough revenue to purchase the Old Malthouse on Trefecca
Road and officially open it as their Clubhouse.
The Club continued to flourish and in 1996 was accepted as a full member of the Welsh
Rugby Union playing its 1st XV fixtures in the Welsh National 7th Division with a
2nd XV team competing in the Pontypool & District Union League.
