A Gwernyfed Development xv travelled to losing Shropshire Cup finalists Bridgnorth last Saturday for the first of 3 pre-season friendlies.

Coaches Mike Eckley and Colin Rees gave each of the 20 man squad a run-out and were impressed with the commitment and level of fitness shown by the Trefecca Road side.

The game mirrored the International at the Millennium Stadium later in the day in that the physical Bridgnorth forwards could not compete against the all round guile of Gwernyfed, whose defence was rock solid until the third minute of injury time.

The Gwernyfed tries were scored by Andy Hill (2), Jordan Curran and Izaak Duffy; with two being converted by Nathan Roberts.

There followed an enjoyable afternoon in the Bridgnorth clubhouse watching Wales defeat England, with former Gwernyfed Junior player unfortunate not to win the Man of the Match award.

All eyes turn to Trefecca Road next week when Llandeilo, coached by another former Gwernyfed player Lyndon Bateman, are the visitors; this will also be a noon kick-off because Wales are playing Argentina at 2.30.
